About the Painting:
‘Beneath The Surface’ is a light reactive painting which can be viewed in natural white light or as a mesmerising piece that moves and changes under RGB lights.
It has a deeply personal meaning exploring the idea of suppressing emotions or feelings which cannot always be put into words or named – and yet, they exist, just beneath the surface.
The original idea was to depict layers of a portrait becoming more and more distorted / rippled / distant, to mimic the sense of being underwater – an effect I liken to derealisation and depersonalisation. This painting is a sister painting to ‘On Dissociation’ and they are part of the same series.
This portrait is obscured and abstracted in natural light, so that the piece gets visually confusing and overwhelming, though still vividly eye-catching.
