About the artwork

‘UNFURL’ is a light reactive painting which can be viewed in natural white light or as a mesmerising piece that moves and changes under RGB lights.

This painting was inspired by my natural surroundings in rural North Wales. High up in the Berwyn range, fiddlehead ferns cover the hillsides. Their slow progression from a tightly coiled stalk to full foliage impresses me every spring. The seasonal awakening of this pre-historic plant is a gentle reminder to me that nature unfolds in its own time, perfectly.

Capturing such an impressive transformation that has been repeating for millions of years felt important to me. This piece is about highlighting the transitions that take place in nature, as a reminder that the world around us is constantly changing and we need to slow down and stay present.

Each layer can be isolated under either red, green or blue light, which slows down and draws attention to the stages at which this fern unfurls. Alternatively, this plant’s movements can be viewed all at once, in natural, full-spectrum light which emphasises this colourful painting.
